Writing with Style. What’s your writing style? Do words just flow from your mind to your fingertips? Do you like handwriting first? Do you plan your posts? Title first or last? Where do you write best?
I’ve always enjoyed writing and I had excellent teachers in school that encouraged me to do it whenever possible. I ended up graduating college with a degree in Creative Writing, believe it or not (it’s proven more useful than you’d think) and while working through that degree I took a number of writing seminars. The painful kind. The kind where you write stories and then sit there while a room full of your peers tears them apart and openly criticizes them (and by proxy, YOU).
You get to tear other people’s writing efforts apart too so it’s all good.
One thing I heard consistently during my classes and peer sessions was, “You write like you talk.” For the most part I think this is very true. I don’t plan, I don’t even outline unless I’m writing an article for a trade magazine, I just sit down and start typing and the words in my head appear on the screen in front of me.
For better or for worse.
I’m new to blogging though, and without HAWMC, I wouldn’t do it regularly at all. So I’m learning my blogging writing style as I go. I can’t say it differs from my everyday writing though. Title always comes first, I think that gives me a “theme” to follow, but the rest is pretty much stream of consciousness with very little editing. It’s my voice after all.
What’s your style?
